How to keep your renewable energy farm secure

on Saturday, 13 May 2017.

The EU has recognised the urgent need to invest in better, and more sustainable renewable energy sources. They have set the UK a target to achieve by 2020: 15% of all energy consumption must be renewable, and within that we have a 10% target for renewables within our transport energy consumption. It is down to the government how they achieve the overall 15% goal, as long as the transport sub-target is met. As a result of this target, the UK has seen an increase in the number of solar and wind farms being established across the country.

Rural land made renewable

According to Defra’s Farm Business Income figures, released in October 2015, there has been a decline in profitability in almost all farming sectors in the UK. Farmers in the UK are now turning to other methods to make a profit and keep their businesses afloat. Leasing their land to renewable energy companies to be used for wind turbines and solar panels helps to bring in an income for farmers when agricultural farming is on the decline; it also helps to contribute towards the UK achieving the target set by the EU.

The problems faced by renewable energy farms

Renewable energy farms such as wind and solar are essential for the future of the UK economy. Not only do they provide an income for the land owners and jobs for the construction and maintenance workers, but they provide a sustainable way in which to power the country today and in the future. Any excess of energy generated can also be sold to other countries, thus bolstering the UK economy further.

However, despite the positive effect that renewable energy farms has on the country, their rural locations leave them open to intrusion, theft, and vandalism. Thieves take advantage of the remote nature of wind and solar farms, trespassing and stealing items or causing deliberate damage. As a land owner or farmer this can be very costly as it prevents the equipment from working efficiently, as well as causing disruption whilst repairs take place.

Tackling the problem

K9 Patrol Ltd specialise in providing security services to keep your property and assets safe. We use a combination of security solutions to protect your renewable farming business:

  • Static Patrols: Security Dog Units can be deployed to patrol the premises, providing a visual deterrent and also they are on hand to apprehend any intruders for the police to deal with accordingly.
  • Mobile Patrols: Mobile Patrols can be an effective solution as they can cover a wider area.
  • Alarm Response: The guard dog security unit can perform a full perimeter check, and the dogs are trained to sniff out intruders and help to remove them from the premises.
  • CCTV: Installing CCTV cameras on site probably won’t act as a deterrent, but if they’re positioned properly they will help to catch any intruders on tape, which is useful for locating and prosecuting them.

If you’d like to find out more about how K9 Patrol can help you to protect your wind or solar farm, please get in touch and a member of our team will be happy to answer your questions and discuss your security requirements with you.
